I’ll be honest. I had subscribed to the Al Murray theory of the Olympics – it’s going to be a bit shit. I even half-wanted it to be crap on the grounds that it has been farce after farce so far – LOCOG’s draconian advertising sith, national flag screw ups and G4S’ quality recruitment programmes, for example. I had zero faith in London’s ability to pull off something spectacular. It only just managed the royal wedding and the Jubilee malarkey. Could it pull an unprecedented third rabbit from its bum? I doubted it.
Enter Danny Boyle, the Oscar winning film director. (Obviously he entered some time ago but for the purposes of this…) His Opening Ceremony instilled a sense of pride in my country that I never thought existed. Even during a a World Cup. He has done more for this country in the last few hours than the last *enter your own number here* governments.
Take a bow, Mr Boyle. And look forward to being a “sir”.
PS- BBC, please don’t ever hire someone as vapid as Trevor Nelson to commentate on something as important as this again.
